Since the 1930s, hot melt extrusion technology (HME) has been used in plastics and food industry. In the 1980s, HME was used as a technology to improve the solubility and bioavailability of insoluble APIs, which has a broad prospect. When twin-screw extruders are used, these challenging APIs can be dispersed in polymer carriers to enhance their effectiveness, making HME an effective technology in the pharmaceutical industry. HME can be used to dissolve new prospective active ingredients which can not be dissolved by other methods. The resulting polymer melt is suitable for the direct formation of tablets, spheres, implants, film agents or patches.
